The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) extended the deadline for homeowners facing foreclosure to apply for help.
Colorado residents have access to $41.3 million in emergency loans through the Emergency Homeowners’ Loan Program (EHLP). The new deadline to apply is now Wednesday.
To qualify for the interest-free loan, up to $50,000, the borrower must be 90 days late in mortgage payments and be unemployed or underemployed. Since far more people will apply than there will be funds available for, a lottery system will be used to pick those who can participate in the full application process.
Colorado Division of Housing spokesman Ryan McMaken said in looking at the number of foreclosures in the state, and the amount of EHLP money available, only about 1,000 Colorado homeowners will actually receive the loans.
“You shouldn’t tie your household’s plan or future to receiving a loan, because the odds of getting one are very low,” McMaken said previously.
Pre-applications are due by July 27. A worksheet can be obtained at www.findEHLP.org or by calling 1-855-346-3345.
